rtw quickies #6

- 7-eleven was a life saver in singapore, malaysia, thailand and hong kong. water, drinks, snacks, meals, you name it. i've never been to one while living in the US.

- while checking in on a hotel in koh samui (thailand), the receptionist couldn't find my name on my passport and put my name as "masculino" on the check in sheet.

- i loved the egyptian food, but i went to mcdonald's once there. it's still the best drunk food ever.

- in hong kong, people spoke a lot of hindi to me. in egypt, it was either spanish or arabic. yeah, multinational looks.

- small airplanes have way longer taxiing times than the big ones. don't know why.

- crocodiles don't need much food. half a chicken is enough for a couple of days. they get most of the energy they need from the sun.

rtw quickies #5

- in egypt, more people spoke arabic to me than english (i do look arab).

- while in halong bay, vietnam, i found out i’m slightly double jointed. things make more sense now.

- i only had to check my backpack twice for the flights. same with my guitar.

- i didn’t see a mcdonald’s in laos, cambodia or vietnam. rumor has it that there’s one in ho chi minh (vietnam) though.

- there’s loads of stray cats in singapore, malaysia and egypt. sick stray dogs in thailand, and huge stray dogs in greece.

rtw numbers: transportation

- it was a total of 16 flights (19 if you count stop overs) with 9 different airlines
22 inter city buses
15 boats/ferries
9 inter city vans
6 trains

- most expensive flight must have been from bali (indonesia) to johannesburg (south africa), with a stop over in doha (qatar).. i bought a package, so i don't know the individual prices..

- the sleeper trains in asia (and even a sleeper bus) are cheap, and very comfortable. i think the whole rocking thing helps..

- one of the best flights was actually 3 (!): brisbane - melbourne - adelaide - singapore.. i know, it was a ridiculous route, but it was all they had available.. i sat on the emergency row on the first flight (roommy!), the second flight was empty, and ond the third i watched a lot of good entertainment on the individual screen (like a movie with megan fox and an iron maiden documentary).. AND they served (good) food every couple of hours!

- my longest journey was from bali to durban:
i left the place i was staying at 8pm,
took a taxi to the airport,
waited 2 hours in line for immigration and customs,
boarded the plane 5 minutes before scheduled departing time, plane was 15 min late
stop over in singapore, waited an hour, boarded back on the same plane,
stop over in doha (qatar), waited 2 hours, boarded on a new plane,
landed in johannesburg, took a taxi to the bus station,
waited there 4 hours for the bus, then took the bus to durban,
arrived durban, took a taxi to the hostel...
> (very) long story short: door to door in 35 hours!

- i also spent my whole birthday between taxis, buses, airports and airplanes, going from durban to pretoria to johannesburg to cairo (egypt)...

videos: swings, water and tubing in laos

laos was so much fun!
this is a little sequence of the swings and jumps at the kouang si waterfall (luang prabang) and the mekong river (vang vieng)..

i opted not to edit out the drunk chick in the end.. that's part of the atmosphere and she's a cool girl (hi, T!) =)

rtw quickies #4

- even after decades trying to control their population, there's still over 30 million possums in new zealand.

- when doing a rescue diving course, the people being 'fake saved' shout "pizza", not "help" (for obvious reasons).

- women can't touch the buddhist monks.

- selling chewing gum is illegal in singapore. contrary to the rumors, possession is not illegal.

- if you go to this countries, you're likely to try this drinks: fiji: kava, australia: goon, singapore: sling, thailand: chang (beer), laos: beerlao and lao lao (whiskey), indonesia: arak. they're all either cheap or traditional, usually both. and generally very bad.

Oct 26, 2010

rtw numbers: people

- i met at least 150 people ("met" meaning talking more than a couple of minutes, exchanging names, etc)

- around 60 people added to facebook, and more popping up every now and then

- people from around 40 countries

- top 3 countries (in number of people i met): 1. england; 2. canada; 3. sweden (surprisingly!)

- i only really met 2 brazilians: one in laos (and then again in vietnam), and one in indonesia.. it was enough.

- i made friends with a few locals: in fiji, singapore, vietnam, egypt and greece

- places with the most beautiful people:
by concentration: queenstown, new zealand
by number: bali, indonesia

rtw faq #4

q: how crazy was your schedule?
a:
it was pretty intense.. for the first half of the trip, i would wake up early (or VERY early), do tourism/sightseeing all day, and party at night, have 3 or 4 hours of sleep, then do it all over again... i'd stay 1 or 2 days at one place, then move on to the next... after a while i got a little tired, and began doing less sightseeing, more relaxing on the beach, less moving from place to place, more hanging out with people i met..

q: do you recommend a schedule like yours?
a:
maybe. i didn't meet a single person who was doing 14 countries in less than 4 months.. next time i do something like this, i'm not gonna do it this way.. the reasons i did this were: 1. i didn't know better; 2. i wanted my final destination to be spain; 3. i wanted a true 'round the world experience. so if you don't mind the hectic schedule, skipping 'less interesting' places, and you just want to have a taste of all these different places, i say do the normal thing: book a one way ticket to one place, and go from there with nothing but a rough itinerary.. but make sure to study your budget!

- egyptians stare at anything different (or "wrong"), and they don’t care. i didn’t care either.

- crocodile’s teeth are for grabbing and tearing, not chewing.

- according to statistics, lawn bowling is the world’s most dangerous sport. more people die playing lawn bowling than any other sport. the average age of the players is 85 years. really.

- while the western part of the menus in asia are subdivided in categories (breakfast, lunch, dinner, appetizers, sandwiches, pizza, pasta, sides, etc…), the asian part is only one (noodles or rice).

- 80% of the fijian land is still owned by natives.

rtw numbers: accomodations

- cheapest: laos ($2.50/night for a room with bathroom)
most expensive:  fiji, new zealand and australia: (around $25 for a dorm bed and shared bathroom)

- most overpriced: hong kong (around $30 for a claustrophobic room. it was also more expensive than usual because there was an event in town, but whatever)

- best: hard to choose one.. i guess i'll vote for the drop inn, in singapore.. it was only 4 months old when i got there, the staff was nice, the owner was always there, hanging out, partying and taking us to cool places, the price was right, the facilities were good, the other people staying there were fun..

- worst: most of the ones in long beach (perhentian islands, malaysia, which is also one of the most beautiful places): usually there's no electricity all day, some have no mosquito net (and you NEED one there!), the bathrooms are filthy and hot water is available only by a miracle...

- hardest to find: hong kong. since they were having an event in town, everything was fully booked and overpriced... i walked all over the place for about 4 hours, i had people calling every place they knew, trying to find a vacancy, but they were all booked full.. i got lucky and found one relatively cheap and relatively clean..

- bathrooms in asia are usually tiny rooms with the toilet, a sink and a shower head.. no shower booth, no shower curtains, no bath tub.. you shower right next to the toilet and the sink.. hence the nickname 'wet rooms'. usually there's no hot water either. i hate cold water, but i kinda had to get used to it..

- most sociable / best vibe: generally, the ones with bars attached, since they tend to have a more social vibe: all the ones in fiji; base in new zealand; base and beaches in australia; drop inn in singapore; backpackers house and hanoi backpackers in vietnam; tekweni in south africa and athenstyle in greece.

- noisiest: hanoi backpackers, in vietnam. it's located in an alley, and there was construction going on right in front of my window.. they were tearing down a building, and since there's no way a bulldozer would fit there, they had sledgehammers and such starting at 7 in the morning...

- most comfortable: the mango bay in siem reap, cambodia.. definitely the most "luxurious" hotel i stayed at during this trip, and it was cost me only about $8/night!

- best located: another hard one.. i guess the ones in fiji, perhentian islands (malaysia) and koh tao (thailand), all right by the beach.. doesn't get much better than this!

- best facilities: the base chain in new zealand and australia have everything you need (kitchen, computers, wifi, lockers, tour agencies, tv room, bars, laundry, storage room...), even though they're not always the best (the kitchen in some of them can be small or dirty, the computers, internet and laundry are overpriced...)

- best party places: uprising beach resort, in fiji; base in sydney and beaches in airlie beach (australia); hanoi backpackers in vietnam.. well, this depends very much on your mood too.. all the ones on the 'most sociable / best vibe' list have lots of parties...

- number of different accommodations: 55, of which:
22 hostels
13 guest houses
7 hotels
3 buses (1 sleeper, 2 regular)
2 camping sites
2 sleeper trains
2 airplanes
2 couchsurfing
1 boat
1 hut on the beach

-- pt --

(acomodacoes)

22 albergues
13 guest houses ("casas de hospedes"?)
7 hoteis
3 onibus (1 era feito pra dormir, 2 eram normais)
2 acampamentos
2 trens noturnos
2 avioes
2 couchsurfing
1 barco
1 cabana na praia

rtw faq #3

q: where did you meet the best people?
a: another hard one.. as far as locals in general, fiji, singapore, malaysia, laos and vietnam.. as far as other travelers, they're awesome pretty much everywhere.. and as far as some specific people that really clicked with me, in australia, singapore, vietnam, bali, egypt and greece (people not necessarily from this countries)..

q: how hard was it to communicate with other people?

a: mostly not hard at all.. most of the travelers were very fluent in english.. very few had a little bit of a hard time, but it didn't really hurt the communication... and since i was mostly in touristic places, the locals generally knew at least the basics.. small towns/villages in asia and egypt in general were a little bit harder, but again, nothing some hand signs couldn't fix..

*if you have any questions or curiosities, leave me a comment or send me an email.. i'll answer them..

-- pt --

p: onde voce conheceu as melhores pessoas?

- nha trang, in vietnam, is actually pronounced "nhé jen" (the 'e' in 'nhe' is like the one in 'yes').

- there is no concept of queues (lines) in egypt.

- in asia, it's considered offensive to show the sole of your feet or to touch someone's head.

- hippos hang out in the water, mate underwater, give birth under water, nurse underwater, feed and defecate underwater. they can stay up to 5 minutes underwater. their closest relatives are the whales.

- i heard "i've got a feeling", by the black eyed peas every single night i went out. therefore, it's the trip's theme song and a guilty pleasure.

-- pt --

- nha trang, no vietnam, e' pronunciado "nhé jen".

most expensive ways to get around: taxis in general, specially in south africa ($30-$50 to/from the airport)

- cheapest tourist attractions: southeast asia ($1 or $2 in general)
most expensive tourist attractions: museums and archaeological sites in egypt, but they almost always offer student discounts

- buses, trains and vans are extremely cheap for intercity travels in southeast asia. the comfort level varies a lot though. trains tend to be the best, then buses, then the vans (which are always a surprise)

- i spent about $50 in "shopping" during my four months traveling. not only i wasn't there for bargains, i also didn't have room in my backpack

braSil: 1st impressions

for almost 6 years pretty much everything was new to me.. the places, the jobs, the experiences, the people in my life (with just a couple of exceptions)..

when i realized i would be visiting braSil, i was afraid.. not afraid to get bored, not of the violence either (ok, a little), but i was afraid i was going to live in the past for a couple of months.. it was a long period away and i didn't know how i would react to seeing how much the places and people changed, or maybe worse: how much they didn't..

the first couple of days were hard on me.. the first couple of hours, especially, were scary, to say the least.. nothing unexpected, but just a little overwhelming.. everybody speaking portuguese around me, it sounded almost wrong.. the anxiety to see my mom.. the horrible, horrible traffic on the way home (5 miles in 1,5 hour? seriously?)..

then i was 'stuck' in a small town (my mom's), having to go to the bank and several government agencies to take care of stuff, doing medical exams, having to dig through boxes of old stuff and decide what stays and what goes to the trash..

but then i realized i was doing something that doesn't really fit me: i was focusing on the wrong side.. i wasn't looking at the bright side of things, and i always can see the bright side of things.. and then everything changed..

having pleasure with the small things.. the food i haven't tasted for years (and i'll tell you it's GOOD food we have!), being with my mom and being able to have my arm around her shoulder while we walked down the street..

so long abroad, and i had forgotten how helpful and friendly my people can be, how we say 'good day' to people we don't know on the street, to someone we meet in the elevator, or to the bus driver, how beautiful rio is at night, with all the little lights in the distance, looking like it's a whole city full of christmas trees..

so i wasn't living in the past after all.. i was remembering the fun moments i had in the past, having a good time in a familiar place, having new experiences with the people i know and love..

being positive does make a difference.. some people don't seem to understand this..

-- pt --

- i was only sick for one day the whole trip: day 54, my fisrt day in cambodia and the exact middle of the trip.

- i can read numbers in arabic. couldn’t pronounce them to save my life, though.

- fiji has more than 300 islands, i visited two. indonesia has more than 17,000, i visited one.

- in vietnam, facebook is blocked. problem solved by using a proxy server like vtunnel or downloading an encryption software like hotspot shield. facebook lite was an option but is no longer available.

- i have over 5,000 files from this trip, between photos and videos.

-- pt --

rtw faq #2

q: how much money did you spend?
a:
most people don't really answer this question.. also, people that travel for 3 to 6 months only go to southeast asia, only the pacific islands/australia, or both, but they hardly include africa and europe to their plans.. i guess these people budget for around $10,000. in my case, the flights to and within africa made a huge difference on my budget, so i had to be more economic than some people while traveling (and i could have been more, but then again, what's the point of traveling and being hungry and never having a good night of sleep?)... but i still made this average budget...

q: which place has the best food?
a:
egypt. even though the asian staples are not bad (rice or noodles), and some places in asia (like vietnam) have better western food than a lot of actual western places, the egyptian food was so amazingly good, i can't even begin to explain.. i'm getting hungry. they have all these dips to eat with bread (gibna beida, baba ganouj, foul eskandrani, humus, mosaka), the fetir (which is like a pancake/pizza thing), the shawerma (a meat sandwich)..and it's dirty cheap!

*if you have any questions or curiosities, leave me a comment or send me an email.. i'll answer them..

-- pt --

the question without a (short) answer

usually, when someone asks where you live, you have an answer. it's easy, right?

depending on who you're talking to and where you are, you can say "spain", or "hollywood", or "oxnard and vineland, by the vallarta supermarket".. even when you're as vague as only telling the country, it's still a simple question with a simple answer..

it's not my case.

you'd be surprised how often you're asked "so... where do you live now?" when you don't have an answer.. or at least a short, normal answer..

fact is, since i left denver, in late january, i don't have an address.. i haven't paid a utility bill, or received a letter.. i haven't had a roommate or taken the trash out (except a couple of times when i was at my sister's)..

from february to may, during the rtw trip, i formulated an answer to the question.. i would say "right now, i'm living right here, because i'm from braSil, but i haven't been there for 5 years. i lived in the states, but i'm not going back. i'm gonna live in spain, but i haven't been there yet.. so, i live here until i go to the next place".

that worked until i went to spain.. then i was there, but i wasn't living there. now i'm im braSil, not living here. now i just don't know what to say anymore... and people keep asking me.. can i be a little more vague than most and just say "the world"? what about the good old "here, there, everywhere"?

i guess i still have to work on that answer, until i move to barcelona... the good thing about this is, i get to live a (tweaked version of a) concept most people like and few have the chance to take advantage of: home is where my backpack is.

nao no meu caso.

portugal

portugal, the mother land... it was a relaxing, good old family style time.. mostly not my real family, but it felt just like it..

leaving france, i met my sister in madrid and we headed to lisbon (on a 2 hour late flight, just our luck), where we met one of her best girlfriends.. we stayed at her family's place..

the pretext for visiting was the optimus alive festival, where guess who was headlining? yep, pearl jam! it was the last show of their european tour, and just as usual, they kicked ass, and so did the crowd.. singing and rockin' with every tune.. just awesome!

then there was the tourism part.. and i had the best guides (the whole family).. people that knew the places, the history and the stories.. not your tipical sightseeing..

since i didn't need a map and only took public transportation once, i was lazy enough not to take notes on the places i visited, so i don't remember or don't know the names of half of them.. shame.

but the ones i do remember are: passeio maritimo de oeiras, zona da expo, bairro alto, largo do chiado, mosteiro dos jeronimos, monumento dos descobrimentos, jardim amalia rodrigues..

my favorite place was the parque gulbenkiani.. i could live in lisbon just to get some friends, grab a guitar, buy some drinks and go for an afternoon there every once in a while... it's the perfect mix of nature, arts, landscape, privacy.. amazing place..

i can't forget to mention watching spain being the world champions with the bridge and the sunset as a background, among a crowd of mostly dutch (or people supporting holland).. i just wanted to see a good game, and i was glad spain won.. they did deserve it..

so i definitely left lisbon with a good impression.. i'm sure i will come back, and i'm sure i will explore the other regions of the country.. 'till next time, portugal!

france

france... it started as a nightmare and it ended like a dream i never had..

my first day had a cancelled flight, a 2 hour late rescheduled flight, not making it in time to watch braSil x holland, and of course, braSil losing the game.. it was for sure the worst day of the year for me.. exausted, stressed, sad..

but from there it was all (or mostly) flowers.. next day i went to a festival in arras with an old friend, saw some good concerts, including cohheed and cambria for the 1st time, and my favorite band in the world, pearl jam, for the 10th time..

after that we were hosted by a french family, had a 6 course meal with them and the italian grandma, played ping pong, and visited the small, cute and historic town of douai, near the belgium border..

back to paris, at some point i decided to go do some sightseeing.. it took me a three hour walk (from the arc de triomphe to notre dame) and maybe a half dozen pictures.. i'm really done with sightseeing!

other than that, playing football next to the invalides hotel (nearly breaking three toes), having picnics by the eiffel tower (days and nights) and at the luxembourg gardens, wine and cheese at the tuileries.. one good day, one lovely night after another..

world cup was over for braSil, so my plans to watch the semi final game on the big screen with the eiffel tower as a background went to the crapper.. but i did watch holland and spain win, going to hostel's bars, with people from everywhere..

and again, the best part was the people.. i met french, italian, lithuanian (from couchsurfing), polish and even a bunch of brazilians, and i had a blast with them... good times indeed..

so now i can say there's one more city on the 'must go back' list.. tres bien!

rtw numbers: distances and places

- i traveled a total of almost 40,000 miles (63,000km):
33,000 miles (53,000km) by air
6,000 miles (10,000km) by land
450 miles (700km) by water

that's about 8 round trips from los angeles to new york, or from the oiapoque to xui (you won't get this if you're not brazilian)..

that is also 1.5 times the circumference of the earth (at the equator)..

- i visited 4 continents, 15 countries, around 70 cities/towns/villages..

- the average time spent was 1.5 days in each city/town/village..

- the longest stay was in kuta (bali, indonesia), for 8 days..
i don't know the shortest.. there were places i visited for only a few hours and moved on..

- the cleanest places were new zealand, australia, hong kong and greece
the dirtiest were asia in general (minus singapore), and egypt..

- immigration/customs took a while in australia and indonesia;
they gave me some trouble in vietnam and hong kong;
the easiest and quickest were in thailand and greece..

- ideal places for partying: anywhere with a bunch of backpackers! but really, queenstown (new zealand), vang vieng (laos), nha trang (vietnam) and bali (indonesia) were my favorites..

-- pt --

- a imigracao demorou bastante na australia e na indonesia;
eles me deram trabalho em vietnam em hong kong;

rtw faq #1

q: what was your favorite country?
a:
hard to answer.. there are so many different things to like: the beauty, the culture, the history, the locals, the parties, the other travelers you meet.. if i really had to choose one country, i guess it would be fiji, because it has a beautiful landscape, a rich culture and history, the locals were amazingly hospitable, the parties were hardcore, and the other travelers were all cool people... AND it was the first country of this trip, which adds the element of first impact..

q: why did you chose to travel by yourself?
a:
at first i was gonna travel with a friend, but he is a pussy and gave up.. so i had no choice, but i think in the end it was actually better.. i had more flexibility with my plans, i could do whatever i felt like.. and to be fair, pretty much every single place i went to, i met good people and ended up hanging out with them, or even traveling around for a few days.. staying in backpacker hostels was the best way to meet people.. i can say i was by myself only when i felt like having some 'me time'..

*if you have any questions or curiosities, leave me a comment or send me an email.. i'll answer them..

-- pt --

new phase

ok, i know i promised a lot of new stuff here... the past few weeks i've been organizing information, working on pictures, selecting videos, calculating numbers and trying to fix the layout of the blog (i wasn't very successful with the last one though..)

so starting tomorrow, i'll try to post something new every two or three days.. and i'm gonna try to use the following categories (as you can see on the sidebar):

planning: the plans for the rtw trip and the next travels as well

faq: the answers to the frequently asked questions about the rtw trip

photos and videos: well..

quickies: mostly one liners, some with useful info, some with curious facts, and a whole lot absolutely useless!

numbers: rtw trip statistics about money, places, people, accommodation, transportation and such

travel journal: transcripts of memorable days taken from my travel journal

highlights: important (or random) moments of the trip

and i guess that's it for now..

any suggestions or questions, please let me know!

--- pt ---
