hong kong

the first thing i noticed when i got to hong kong was how much it reminded me of new york.. and after thinking about it, i realized there's many similarities:

. they're both compact, vertical (tall buildings and skyscrapers), island cities
. the streets are always crowded
. neon signs everywhere
. big name stores, like prada, louis vuitton, cartier, rolex, dior, etc
. beautiful skyline view from across the river/ocean
. expensive accommodations, but you can eat for cheap
. observation decks on top of buildings (empire state/ny, bank of china/hk)
. good public transportation system

and some differences:

. ny is full of brazilians, hk is full of.. well, asians
. ny has hostels, hk has claustrophobic rooms (check out the picture)
. in ny, indians drive cabs, in hk, they own guesthouses and try to sell you fake watches, tailored suits or drugs

...

i didn't do much in hong kong, because the weather sucked every day.. when it wasn't raining, it was just way to misty, cloudy and cold for any fun activity..

i ended up going to three museums one day (history, art and space), since it was free admission day, which also meant the schools took kids on field trips, and they were all over the place..

on my last day, the weather was still bad for photography, but at least it was good enough for some sightseeing.. i went to the peak, where you have a supposedly great view of the skyscrapers in the island and across the ocean..

other than that, i spent most of the time in my cell (i can't really call it a room), playing guitar, surfing the net and watching family guy..

immigration and security really pissed me off though.. i had my background checked both on arrival and departure (which meant waiting and waiting while everybody else went through in a minute); and security confiscated my nail scissors and my sunscreen.. not for the money, but c'mon, gimme a break you douchebags..

. as ruas estao sempre lotadas
. pontos de observacao em arranha-ceus (empire state/ny, bank of china/hk)
. bom sistema de transporte publico

e algumas diferencas:

vietnam

going straight to the point, i loved vietnam, and it's mostly because of the few days i spent in nha trang..

nha trang is a beach city on the southeast coast of the country... there i chilled out on the beach, read my book under a palm tree, played football with some locals, went diving, went on a night party cruise and on a fun day cruise, and met some good people along the way..

maybe i really missed the beach, maybe i was tired of cities and temples and ruins, maybe nha trang it's a lovely place with a great vibe and awesome people.. most likely it's all of it, but all i can tell is this has been one of my favorite places so far..

there's nothing amazingly beautiful or different about the city, but the vibe was good and it just felt right.. i stayed 4 nights there, more time than i spent anywhere, and i still think i left too early!

i had to skip the rest of the east coast because of my schedule, so i flew to the capital, hanoi, a chaotic place.. i stayed in an area crowded with backpackers, so mostly i spent the day walking along the hoan kiem lake and the night hanging out with the people from the hostel..

from hanoi, i went on a 3 day, 2 night cruise to halong bay.. weather was crap, misty, hazy and cold at times, which didn't help the party portion of the trip (or the photography, for that matter), but it did make the scenery look very surreal, with a science fiction vibe to it..

on first day on the boat we went kayaking and caving.. then just hung out and had some fun at night, playing drinking games and having a good laugh..

next day, we stayed a day in castaway island, a tiny beach that only people from the cruise have access to.. and there i played badminton, beach volleyball, ping pong and went wakeboarding (and did surprisingly well)..

it was a good time, but the next few days were awful.. first, every muscle in my body was sore because of the activities.. second, i managed to get about 100 mosquito bites, even having bug spray on, pants, sleeping covered with a duvet and a mosquito net..

i don't know, back home, i never had trouble with mosquitoes.. but this is the third time on this trip i get seriously attacked (first fiji, then australia).. well, i guess i'll just put some hydrocortizone on it to help with the itching, and wait for the next attack!

cambodia

my stay in cambodia was quick, sick and hot..

quick because i was there for only 4 days.. i flew from vientiane (laos) to siem reap, stayed there for two days, then took the bus to the capital, phnom penh, where i stayed for another two days, before taking the bus to ho chi minh city, in vietnam..

sick in more than one way.. like i said, i left laos in bad shape, and it only got worse in cambodia.. i went straight to a pharmacy, where they gave me a cocktail of drugs.. i had no option, so i just took them and stayed in bed watching animal planet and taking naps all day..

well i'll be damned.. laos medicine works! i woke up at 6am the next day, feeling like a million dollars.. borrowed a cheap bike from the hotel and went to check out the angkor archaeological park, about 12km from the city..

the place is huge (400 square km), full of ruins dating from the 9th to the 15th centuries.. it's also overcrowded with tourists and locals selling all sorts of stuff.. the main structure/ruin/attraction is the angkor wat, but i don't think it was as impressive as the bayon, for example..

i biked and walked around all day, until about 3pm... the sun was cruel, so i decided not to stay for sunset (it was gonna be SO crowded anyway), and headed back to the hotel early.. "splurged" on a massage ($6!) and relaxed the rest of the day..

the other part where cambodia was sick, is their cruel recent history.. during the mid to late 70's, a communist group known as the khmer rouge took control of the country, arrested, tortured and killed millions of people..

right in the city, there's the tuol sleng genocide museum, a school that was converted into a prison and a torture center from 75 to 79.. more than 14,000 people where brought there and tortured before they were taken to the killing fields to be executed.. only 8 people made out of there alive..

you still can see the whole structure, the tiny cells, torture equipment, photos of hundreds/thousands of prisoners and the most impressive to me, the rooms and the beds where 9 people were found dead when they took down the regime, along with pictures of the bodies right where they where found (and where i was standing)..

the killing fields of cheoung ek, about 17km from the city, was one of the hundreds of killing fields throughout cambodia, where they executed millions of people.. almost 9,000 were exhumed just there..

they have a stupa with thousands of skulls, bones and clothes of the people they found buried in the mass graves.. one of the mass graves had over 450 bodies..another one had over 160, all headless...

the sickest part to me is a tree where they used to beat children to death, grabbing them by their feet and banging their heads on the tree.. when they didn't just throw them up in the air and shot them, like a clay pigeon..

another interesting thing is the pieces of cloth, bones and teeth turning up from the ground where they were buried.. they're just everywhere while you're walking about the place.. sick indeed.

the hot part is simple: i've never been to a place that hot! not without the beach, a lake or a pool nearby.. there was a lake alright, but it was as toxic as it gets, so i just stayed the rest of the day at the guest house, eating and taking quick cold showers every couple of hours.. and i hate cold showers!

so, quick, sick and hot.. good times, cambodia!

laos

laos was great.. good people, landscape with a potential (but you can't really see much, since there fire and smoke everywhere), cheap accommodation, good food, free drinks..

i started taking the 2 day / 1 night slow boat down the mekong river from the thai border to luang prabang.. the boat was indeed slow, unsafe, very overcrowded (i had to either stand or sit on the floor with my knees to my chest), the river is brown and the scenery is gray (smoke), but still, it was worth the experience and i met some great people there..

luang prabang is a cute little town, with a few temples and a big night market.. just 30 minutes outside of the town, there's the kouang si waterfall, which isn't amazing, but it's good enough for some pictures, and there's also some swimming pools, one with a swing on a tree.. the water was cold, so i jumped off of the swing a couple of times, then headed back to town..

nightlife is interesting there.. you go eat and hang out at the bars, but there's a curfew at midnight, so after that, you go to the little bowling alley, the only place open and serving drinks until 3am..

a little south of luang prabang, there's vang vieng, town of the wasted backpackers.. the schedule there? wake up late, eat, go to the bars by the river, drink, swim, drink, swing, drink, dance, drink, then head back to town by sunset time, hit the bars, and.. well, drink and party more. repeat the next day.. and the next..

the town is pretty much a few blocks with guest houses, restaurants and clubs.. most of the restaurants have tvs playing either friends or family guy all day long.. i spent at least a couple of hours watching family guy every time i went for lunch!

most people wouldn't think of laos as a party country, but most people don't know about the "lao lao", or whiskey lao.. it's their own liquor, made out of rice.. tastes horrible, but they give it for free everywhere, just to get people started.. and it works.. i've never seen so many wasted people wandering the streets..

from vang vieng, i went to vientiane, the capital, where there's absolutely nothing to do, but i was going to fly out of there, so it was a necessary stop.. the plan was to sleep at the airport (my flight was at 6am), but once i got there, i was told i couldn't.. since i was felling sick, i went to a guest house, took some medicine and rested a little...

4am, the next morning, the taxi driver didn't show up.. the receptionist tried calling other drivers, but it was to early and nobody answered the phone.. he said my best option would be walk down the dark and deserted streets and try to find a cab or a tuk-tuk running..

sick and getting late for my flight, off i went.. with a drunk out of her mind lady boy following me on her scooter, harassing me, offering me a ride to the airport (yeah, right), not speaking a word of english.. i tried everything, but she wouldn't leave.. the most uncomfortable situation so far..

she finally left me alone some 10 minutes later, and i found a tuk-tuk right after.. i made it to the airport safely and in time for my flight to cambodia.. but what a crappy last day in laos!
