rtw numbers: distances and places
- i traveled a total of almost 40,000 miles (63,000km):
33,000 miles (53,000km) by air
6,000 miles (10,000km) by land
450 miles (700km) by water
that's about 8 round trips from los angeles to new york, or from the oiapoque to xui (you won't get this if you're not brazilian)..
that is also 1.5 times the circumference of the earth (at the equator)..
- i visited 4 continents, 15 countries, around 70 cities/towns/villages..
- the average time spent was 1.5 days in each city/town/village..
- the longest stay was in kuta (bali, indonesia), for 8 days..
i don't know the shortest.. there were places i visited for only a few hours and moved on..
- the cleanest places were new zealand, australia, hong kong and greece
the dirtiest were asia in general (minus singapore), and egypt..
- immigration/customs took a while in australia and indonesia;
they gave me some trouble in vietnam and hong kong;
the easiest and quickest were in thailand and greece..
- ideal places for partying: anywhere with a bunch of backpackers! but really, queenstown (new zealand), vang vieng (laos), nha trang (vietnam) and bali (indonesia) were my favorites..

isso e' o equivalente a 8 viagens de ida e volta de los angeles a nova york, ou do oiapoque ao xui'...
essa distancia tambem e' o equivalente a uma volta e meia na terra (pelo equador)
- visitei 4 continentes, 15 paises, por volta de 70 cidades e vilarejos..
- passei uma media de 1.5 dias em cada cidade / vilarejo..
- o lugar onde fiquei por mais tempo foi kuta (bali, indonesia), por 8 dias..
eu nao sei onde fiquei por menos tempo.. em alguns lugares, so' estive por algumas horas e segui viagem..
- os lugares mais limpos foram nova zelandia, australia, hong kong e grecia
os mais sujos foram a asia em geral (exceto singapura), e o egito..
- a imigracao demorou bastante na australia e na indonesia;
eles me deram trabalho em vietnam em hong kong;
e foram muito faceis e rapidos na tailandia e na grecia..
- os melhores lugares pra se fazer festa: qualquer um com um monte de mochileiros! mas de verdade, queenstown (nova zelandia), vang vieng (laos), nha trang (vietnam) e bali (indonesia) foram meus favoritos..

greece
whoa, greece! the last country on my rtw adventure.. i don't really feel like writing a normal post, so i'm just gonna do a list of goods, bads and curious..
goods:
- the hills: the views from the acropolis and philopappos (in athens), the palamidi castle (in nafplio) and the temple of poseidon (sounio) are nothing short of amazing..
- nafplio: small town southwest of athens, it was the first capital of modern greece (1800's ad).. the palamidi castle is there, and you go up 999 steps to the top of it, and the place is gigantic.. from there you have a 360 degree view of the valley on one side and the ocean on the other..
- sounio: i don't know if there's anything else there.. beaches, i suppose.. but the reason people go there is to see the temple of poseidon, which is situated right on the edge of a cliff, and the sunset there is considered one of the best in greece..
- graffiti: it's all over the place and there's some good stuff.. i think it adds personality to the city..
- the acropolis: visiting it was a bad (read on..), but you can see it from pretty much anywhere in the city (at least the parts i went to), and specially at night, when it's illuminated, it's a hell of a sight..
- couchsurfing: again, i did some couchsurfing and my host was great.. she took me to a local alternative scene, to a friend's birthday party on a rooftop with an incredible view, to some non touristy bars and restaurants and to a friends dance/acrobatics performance.. the experience was so much better than any tourist attraction!
bads:
- the acropolis: not the acropolis itself, but the fact that there was a million people there, and what i disliked the most, the cranes and building equipments all over the place (mostly the parthenon), because they're doing restaurations to make it look like it did originally... i much rather see the original thing fall to pieces.. it's just natural!
- graffiti: there's some dirty looking, ugly ones as well..
- the money: spending euros really hurts the wallet, specially after two months in asia, and immediately after egypt.. i still managed to be economic, not eating in expensive places, using my student discounts when possible, and couchsurfing..
curious:
- there are dogs all over the city.. big, fat dogs.. and most of them wear collars.. the government gets them, then vaccinate and tag them, then send them back to the streets.. they 'took care' of some before the olympic games in 2004 and the people went crazy about it, so now they have no choice..

uau, grecia! o ultimo pais na minha aventura ao redor do mundo.. eu nao to com vontade de escrever um post normal, entao eu so' vou fazer uma lista do bom, ruim e curioso..
bom:
- as montanhas: as vistas da acropolis e philopappos (em atenas), o castelo de palamidi (em nafplio) e o templo de poseidon (sounio) sao espetaculares..
- nafplio: uma cidadezinha a sudoeste de atenas, foi a primeira capital da grecia moderna (anos 1800 dc).. o castelo de palamidi fica la, e voce tem que subir os 999 degraus pra chegar ao topo, e o lugar e' gigantesco.. de la voce tem uma vista de 360 graus do vale de um lado, e o oceano do outro..
- sounio: eu nao sei se tem mais alguma coisa la.. praias, eu acho.. mas as pessoas vao la mesmo pra ver o templo de poseidon, que fica a beira de um penhasco, e o por do sol la' e' considerado um dos mais bonitos na grecia..
- grafite: esta' por todo lado e tem muita coisa boa.. eu acho que adiciona mais personalidade pra cidade..
- a acropolis: a visita foi ruim (continue lendo..), mas voce pode ve-la de praticamente qualquer lugar na cidade (pelo menos as partes que eu fui), e especialmente de noite, quando esta' iluminada, a vista e' fantastica..
- couchsurfing: mais uma vez, eu fiz couchsurfing e a minha host foi otima.. ela me levou 'a cena alternativa local, 'a festa de aniversario de uma amiga num terraco, com uma vista linda, a alguns bares e restaurantes na area nao turistica da cidade e a uma performance de danca/acrobacias de um amigo.. a experiencia foi muito melhor que qualquer atracao turistica!
ruim:
- a acropolis: nao a acropolis de verdade, mas o fato de que tinha um milhao de pessoas la, e o que mais me decepcionou, guindastes e equipamentos de construcao por todo lado (principalmente no parthenon), porque eles estao restaurando os templos pra eles parecerem o maximo com os originais.. eu prefiro ver a estrutura original caindo aos pedacos.. e' simplesmente natural!
- grafite: nao sei o que o dunga tava pensando! (HA! piadela..).. mas de verdade, tem muita grafite feia na cidade, o que da um visual sujo as vezes..
- o dinheiro: gastar em euros realmente doi no bolso, principalmente depois de 2 meses na asia e imediatamente depois do egito.. eu ainda consegui ser economico, nao comendo em lugares caros, usando meu desconto de estudante sempre que possivel e fazendo couchsurfing..
curioso:
- tem cachorro pela cidade toda.. grandes e gordos.. e a maioria deles tem coleira.. o governo pega, vacina, bota coleira e os devolve pra rua.. eles estavam "resolvendo o problema" perto das olimpiadas de 2004, mas a populacao se revoltou, entao agora eles nao tem escolha..

(kinda) done planning
i'm finished with the planning! it's Tminus17 and i'm ready to go... as soon as i get my passport back (it's on the way to get the indian visa now)..
