q: how much money did you spend?
a: most people don't really answer this question.. also, people that travel for 3 to 6 months only go to southeast asia, only the pacific islands/australia, or both, but they hardly include africa and europe to their plans.. i guess these people budget for around $10,000. in my case, the flights to and within africa made a huge difference on my budget, so i had to be more economic than some people while traveling (and i could have been more, but then again, what's the point of traveling and being hungry and never having a good night of sleep?)... but i still made this average budget...
q: which place has the best food?
a: egypt. even though the asian staples are not bad (rice or noodles), and some places in asia (like vietnam) have better western food than a lot of actual western places, the egyptian food was so amazingly good, i can't even begin to explain.. i'm getting hungry. they have all these dips to eat with bread (gibna beida, baba ganouj, foul eskandrani, humus, mosaka), the fetir (which is like a pancake/pizza thing), the shawerma (a meat sandwich)..and it's dirty cheap!

r: a maioria das pessoas nao responde a essa pergunta.. e mais, pessoas que viajam por 3 a 6 meses so' vao para o sudeste asiatico, so' oceania, ou os dois, mas raramente incluem africa ou europa nesses planos.. pelo que sei, essas pessoas planejam em gastar por volta de $10.000. no meu caso, os voos para e a partir da africa fizeram uma enorme diferenca no meu orcamento, entao eu tive que ser mais economico que algumas pessoas enquanto estava viajando (e eu poderia ter sido ainda mais, mas ai' qual seria a graca de viajar pra ficar com fome e nunca ter uma boa noite de sono?).. mas eu ainda consegui ficar nessa media de gastos..
p: que lugar tinha a melhor comida?
r: egito. por mais que as comidas tradicionais asiaticas (arroz e macarrao) fossem boas, e alguns lugares na asia (como o vietnam) terem comida ocidental mais gostosa do que muito lugar no ocidente, a comida egipcia e' tao ridiculamente boa que eu nao consigo nem comecar a explicar.. ja' estou ficando com fome. eles tem varias pastinhas pra voce molhar o pao (gibna beida, baba ganouj, foul eskandrani, humus, mosaka), o fetir (que e' como uma mistura de panqueca/pizza), o shawerma (um sanduiche de carne).. e e' tudo muito barato!

rtw numbers: distances and places
- i traveled a total of almost 40,000 miles (63,000km):
33,000 miles (53,000km) by air
6,000 miles (10,000km) by land
450 miles (700km) by water
that's about 8 round trips from los angeles to new york, or from the oiapoque to xui (you won't get this if you're not brazilian)..
that is also 1.5 times the circumference of the earth (at the equator)..
- i visited 4 continents, 15 countries, around 70 cities/towns/villages..
- the average time spent was 1.5 days in each city/town/village..
- the longest stay was in kuta (bali, indonesia), for 8 days..
i don't know the shortest.. there were places i visited for only a few hours and moved on..
- the cleanest places were new zealand, australia, hong kong and greece
the dirtiest were asia in general (minus singapore), and egypt..
- immigration/customs took a while in australia and indonesia;
they gave me some trouble in vietnam and hong kong;
the easiest and quickest were in thailand and greece..
- ideal places for partying: anywhere with a bunch of backpackers! but really, queenstown (new zealand), vang vieng (laos), nha trang (vietnam) and bali (indonesia) were my favorites..

- passei uma media de 1.5 dias em cada cidade / vilarejo..
- o lugar onde fiquei por mais tempo foi kuta (bali, indonesia), por 8 dias..
eu nao sei onde fiquei por menos tempo.. em alguns lugares, so' estive por algumas horas e segui viagem..
- os lugares mais limpos foram nova zelandia, australia, hong kong e grecia
os mais sujos foram a asia em geral (exceto singapura), e o egito..
- a imigracao demorou bastante na australia e na indonesia;
eles me deram trabalho em vietnam em hong kong;
e foram muito faceis e rapidos na tailandia e na grecia..
- os melhores lugares pra se fazer festa: qualquer um com um monte de mochileiros! mas de verdade, queenstown (nova zelandia), vang vieng (laos), nha trang (vietnam) e bali (indonesia) foram meus favoritos..

egypt
egypt: pyramids, desert, sphinx, history, ruins, tombs, sarcophaguses (or sarcophagi, your choice), pharaohs.. everybody knows that part.. but is there anything more? really, as far as general tourism, i don't think so..
at first, i hated egypt. it is hot, dirty, noisy, ugly, dusty, hectic, dry and polluted.. thinking maybe only cairo was like this, after a couple of days (and after seeing the pyramids and the museum) i decided to go to alexandria..
alexandria is by the beach, and i thought it'd more laid back, where i could get away from the chaos and relax, but i was wrong.. it was just as bad, but with worse accommodations and even less interesting stuff to see..
and then my luck changed: i met an amazing local girl through couchsurfing, and instead of sightseeing and doing touristy things, i made a friend.. we hung out for 3 days, talking hours over tea, stuffing our bellies with amazing egyptian food, playing guitar at the park or just walking around aimlessly..
it was some fantastic 3 days, but i had to go back to cairo and see more stuff.. so i did, and then i met more couchsurfers and some of their friends.. we were 6, all from different countries, different backgrounds and different reasons for being in cairo.. one of them never did much sightseeing, so we decided to go on a 'tourist day'..
we actually didn't see much, because it was pretty hot and we met kinda late, but we managed to go to the citadel, in islamic cairo, with some mosques (including the mohamed ali mosque) and an old palace.. then we waited for a dramatic sunset over a panoramic view of the city at the al-azhar park..
other than the good people, one thing i absolutely loved about egypt is the food.. shawerma (meat sandwich), fetir (sort of a pancake), gibna beida, baba ganouj, foul eskandrani, humus, mosaka (dips).. jeez, my mouth is watering already!
so there you go.. started with bad impressions, left wanting more.. five thousand years of history, and still surprising, this is egypt.

egito: piramides, deserto, esfinge, historia, ruinas, tumbas, sarcofagos, faraos.. todo mundo sabe dessa parte.. mas tem mais alguma coisa? de verdade, em geral, turisticamente, eu acho que nao..
a principio eu odiei o egito. e' quente, sujo, barulhento, feio, empoeirado, caotico, seco e poluido.. pensando que talvez isso fosse so' em cairo, depois de uns 2 dias (e depois de ver as piramides e o museu) eu decidi ir a alexandria..
alexandria e' uma cidade praiana, e eu achei que seria mais sossegada, onde eu poderia me livrar do caos e relaxar, mas eu estava errado.. era tao ruim quanto, mas com piores acomodacoes e ainda menos coisas interessantes pra ver..
e ai' minha sorte virou: eu conheci uma fantastica garota local atraves do couchsurfing, e ao ives de ver a cidade e fazer passeios turisticos, eu fiz uma amizade.. a gente passou 3 dias juntos, conversando por horas e tomando cha, enchendo a banha com a maravilhosa comida egipcia, tocando violao no parque e simplesmente andando sem rumo pela cidade..
foram 3 dias fantasticos, mas eu tinha que voltar a cairo pra ver mais coisas.. entao eu voltei, e conheci mais gente do couchsurfing e amigos deles tambem.. eramos 6, todos de paises diferentes, e todos em cairo por razoes diferentes.. um deles nao tinha visto muito a parte turistica da cidade ainda, entao a gente combinou de tirar um "dia de turista"..
nos nao vimos muito, porque o dia estava extremamente quente e a gente se encontrou meio tarde, mas tivemos tempo de ir ao citadel, no cairo islamico, com alguns mosques (incluindo o importante mohamed ali mosque) e um palacio antigo.. depois ficamos esperando pelo por do sol dramatico sobre uma vista panoramica da cidade, no parque al-azhar..
alem das pessoas, outra coisa que eu absolutamente adorei no egito foi a comida.. shawerma (sanduiche de carne), fetir (tipo uma panqueca), gibna beida, baba ganouj, foul eskandrani, humus, mosaka (tipo pates).. humm, ja ta dando agua na boca!
entao ta ai'.. comecei com uma ma impressao, terminei querendo mais.. cinco mil anos de historia, e ainda surpreendente, esse e' o egito.

(kinda) done planning
i'm finished with the planning! it's Tminus17 and i'm ready to go... as soon as i get my passport back (it's on the way to get the indian visa now)..
