rtw quickies #2
- nha trang, in vietnam, is actually pronounced "nhé jen" (the 'e' in 'nhe' is like the one in 'yes').
- there is no concept of queues (lines) in egypt.
- in asia, it's considered offensive to show the sole of your feet or to touch someone's head.
- hippos hang out in the water, mate underwater, give birth under water, nurse underwater, feed and defecate underwater. they can stay up to 5 minutes underwater. their closest relatives are the whales.
- i heard "i've got a feeling", by the black eyed peas every single night i went out. therefore, it's the trip's theme song and a guilty pleasure.

this is the second video i post here, and coincidentally, the second from vietnam.. i'll vary next time, i promise..
not a very cultural video, just a funny moment... i met these two vietnamese sisters in nha trang, on a boat trip.. they loved asking questions.. firing them nonstop.. so i made a video..

- i was only sick for one day the whole trip: day 54, my fisrt day in cambodia and the exact middle of the trip.
- i can read numbers in arabic. couldn’t pronounce them to save my life, though.
- fiji has more than 300 islands, i visited two. indonesia has more than 17,000, i visited one.
- in vietnam, facebook is blocked. problem solved by using a proxy server like vtunnel or downloading an encryption software like hotspot shield. facebook lite was an option but is no longer available.
- i have over 5,000 files from this trip, between photos and videos.

video: street crossing in vietnam
this was right after a street event in hanoi, vietnam..
at first, i was only going to show the hectic traffic, but then i realized i had to cross the intersection, so i did..

vietnam
going straight to the point, i loved vietnam, and it's mostly because of the few days i spent in nha trang..
nha trang is a beach city on the southeast coast of the country... there i chilled out on the beach, read my book under a palm tree, played football with some locals, went diving, went on a night party cruise and on a fun day cruise, and met some good people along the way..
maybe i really missed the beach, maybe i was tired of cities and temples and ruins, maybe nha trang it's a lovely place with a great vibe and awesome people.. most likely it's all of it, but all i can tell is this has been one of my favorite places so far..
there's nothing amazingly beautiful or different about the city, but the vibe was good and it just felt right.. i stayed 4 nights there, more time than i spent anywhere, and i still think i left too early!
i had to skip the rest of the east coast because of my schedule, so i flew to the capital, hanoi, a chaotic place.. i stayed in an area crowded with backpackers, so mostly i spent the day walking along the hoan kiem lake and the night hanging out with the people from the hostel..
from hanoi, i went on a 3 day, 2 night cruise to halong bay.. weather was crap, misty, hazy and cold at times, which didn't help the party portion of the trip (or the photography, for that matter), but it did make the scenery look very surreal, with a science fiction vibe to it..
on first day on the boat we went kayaking and caving.. then just hung out and had some fun at night, playing drinking games and having a good laugh..
next day, we stayed a day in castaway island, a tiny beach that only people from the cruise have access to.. and there i played badminton, beach volleyball, ping pong and went wakeboarding (and did surprisingly well)..
it was a good time, but the next few days were awful.. first, every muscle in my body was sore because of the activities.. second, i managed to get about 100 mosquito bites, even having bug spray on, pants, sleeping covered with a duvet and a mosquito net..
i don't know, back home, i never had trouble with mosquitoes.. but this is the third time on this trip i get seriously attacked (first fiji, then australia).. well, i guess i'll just put some hydrocortizone on it to help with the itching, and wait for the next attack!

indo direto ao ponto, eu adorei o vietnam, e basicamente por causa dos dias que eu passei em nha trang..
nha trang e' uma cidade praiana no sudeste do pais.. la eu fui a praia, li meu livro embaixo de uma palmeira, joguei futebol com os locais, fiz mergulho, fui num 'cruzeiro-festa' de noite e num 'cruseiro-turismo' durante o dia, e conheci um povo gente boa no caminho..
talvez eu realmente tava sentindo falta da praia, talvez eu estava cansado de cidades e templos e ruinas, talvez nha trang seja um lugar adoravel, com uma energia boa e pessoas otimas.. provavelmente e' tudo isso, mas o que eu posso dizer e' que esse ja' e' um dos meus lugares preferidos nessa viagem..
a cidade nao tem nada excepcionalmente bonito ou diferente, mas a energia era boa, e eu simplesmente me senti bem por la'... eu fiquei 4 noites na cidade, mais tempo que eu passei em qualquer lugar, e ainda acho que eu fui embora cedo demais!
eu tive que pular o resto da costa, porque nao teria tempo de ver tudo, entao eu voei pra capital, hanoi, um lugar caotico.. fiquei numa area cheia de mochileiros, entao eu passei a maior parte do dia caminhando ao redor do lago hoan kiem, e as noites socializando com o povo do albergue..
de hanoi, fui a um cruzeiro de 3 dias, 2 noites em halong bay.. o clima estava horrivel, cheio de neblina, nublado e frio, as vezes.. isso atrapalhou os planos de festa (e fotografia tambem), mas por outro lado, fez o cenario parecer surreal, parecendo ficcao cientifica..
no primeiro dia no barco, nos andamos de caiaque e exploramos uma pequena caverna.. depois ficamos no barco e fizemos uma leve festa de noite, nada demais, mas deu pra descontrair..
no dia seguinte, ficamos numa praia minima, que so' o pessoal do cruzeiro tinha acesso.. la' eu joguei badminton (tipo tenis misturado com peteca), volei de praia, ping pong, fiz wakeboarding (tipo snowboarding, so' que na agua)..
foi um dia otimo, mas os dias seguintes foram pessimos.. primeiro, todos os musculos do meu corpo estavam doloridos por causa das atividades.. segundo, eu consegui ter por volta de 100 picadas de pernilongo, mesmo usando repelente, vestindo calca e camiseta pra dormir, coberto com edredon e tela pra mosquitos..
sei la'.. no brasil e nos states, eu nunca tive problemas com mosquitos.. mas essa ja e' a terceira vez nessa viagem que eu sou atacado seriamente (primeiro em fiji, depois australia).. bom, acho que eu vou colocar hidrocortizona nas picadas pra ver se para de cocar um pouco, e vamos ver quando vai ser o proximo ataque!

more hardcore planning
11 more hours of study and i have the outlines for another 40 days/6 countries: singapore, malaysia, thailand, laos, cambodia and vietnam.
i'm not going to be doing any organized tour (like i will in fiji, nz and oz), so it's even harder to decide where to and not to go.. but i think i made good choices..
here's a little taste:
the sri veerama kaliamman (in singapore), is a funky looking, brightly colored temple..

in kuala lumpur (malaysia), the petronas towers.. they where the tallest buildings in the world for a few years..

koh samui (koh = island), in thailand.. recommended by a friend who lived there.. sounds like a good idea to me!

near vang vieng, laos.. this is a lagoon by the phu kham cave.. reached by bicycle..

angkor wat (cambodia).. the temple is so important it's on the cambodian flag..

halong bay, vietnam.. 3 day, 2 night cruise aboard one of this weird boats called junks (their design dates from 200 bc).. caves and kayaking included!

mais 11 horas de estudo e eu tenho o planejamento para mais 40 dias/6 paises: singapura, malasia, tailandia, laos, cambodia e vietnam.
eu nao vou fazer nenhuma turne organizada (como eu vou fazer na oceania), entao fica mais dificil ainda decidir onde ir ou nao ir... mas eu acho que fiz boas escolhas...
so' um aperitivo:
