it's over, but it's not

so after 107 days, my 'round the world adventure is over, but hey, i'm not sad.. not only i had some of the best experiences of my life, but now it's time for a new beginning.. looking back and looking ahead..

i'm in spain now, taking time to digest the last four months, take everything in, organize my stuff, talk to old friends, work on my pictures, see how (and where) the people i met are, and of course, enjoy my sister after almost three years apart..

and there's a lot to be done as well.. i have to figure out how i'm going to be able to stay here in spain for a while, decide where to go, begin organizing the paperwork, study work options and everything else..

there's also some more travels to be done, of course! one of the reasons i didn't include europe to the rtw itinerary is because being in spain, it's really easy to explore the rest of the continent, a little bit at a time...

for now i'm gonna take it easy, see a little and plan a lot.. i should go to barcelona in late june to see a kiss concert, and also (hopefully) have the paperwork ready to apply for a school there and begin the house hunting, at least for ideas..

then there's france for a week in early july, where i'm going to visit an old friend and go to a pearl jam concert.. and right after, portugal, where i'll meet my sister and friends, go to the last show of the pearl jam european tour, watch the world cup finals and do a little tourism..

but that's not all! i have many, many plans for the .sapo., there's still a lot of information to be posted here.. actually, there's way more to come than i have already posted.. curiosities, numbers, tips, photos, videos..

i'm very excited and a little overwhelmed with all this, but bear with me, and soon everything will fall into place.. just have to get a new rhythm worked out..

entao depois de 107 dias, minha aventura ao redor do mundo acabou, mas hey, eu nao estou triste.. nao so' eu tive umas das melhores experiencias da minha vida, mas agora e' hora de um novo comeco... olhando pra tras e olhando pra frente..

agora estou na espanha, tomando meu tempo pra digerir os ultimos quatro meses, absorver tudo, organizar minhas coisas, falar com velhos amigos, saber como (e onde) as pessoas que eu conheci estao, e claro, curtir a minha irma, depois de quase tres anos distantes..

e ainda tem muita coisa a ser feita.. tenho que descobrir como vou ficar aqui na espanha por um tempo, decidir onde vou, comecar a organizar a papelada, estudar minhas opcoes de trabalho e tudo mais..

tambem tenho algumas viagens pra fazer, claro! um dos motivos pelo qual nao inclui' a europa no meu itinerario da viagem foi porque estando na espanha, e' facil explorar o resto do continente, um pouco de cada vez..

por enquanto eu vou devagar, ver um pouco e planejar um monte.. eu devo ir a barcelona no final de junho pra ver um show do kiss, e tambem (espero) ter a papelada pronta pra me matricular numa escola e comecar a procurar lugar pra morar..

e vou pra franca no comeco de julho, pra visitar um velho amigo e ir a um show do pearl jam.. e em seguida, portugal, onde vou encontrar minha irma e amigos, ir ao ultimo show da turne europeia do pearl jam, assistir a final da copa e fazer um pouco de turismo..

mas isso nao e' tudo! eu tenho muitos, muitos planos pra o .sapo., ainda tem muita informacao pra colocar aqui.. pra falar a verdade, tem muito mais a vir do que eu ja postei.. curiosidades, numeros, dicas, fotos, videos..

eu estou bem animado e um pouco sobrecarregado com tudo isso, mas tenha paciencia, e em breve tudo vai estar no seu devido lugar.. so' preciso de um tempo pra entar no ritmo novo..

greece

whoa, greece! the last country on my rtw adventure.. i don't really feel like writing a normal post, so i'm just gonna do a list of goods, bads and curious..

goods:
- the hills: the views from the acropolis and philopappos (in athens), the palamidi castle (in nafplio) and the temple of poseidon (sounio) are nothing short of amazing..

- nafplio: small town southwest of athens, it was the first capital of modern greece (1800's ad).. the palamidi castle is there, and you go up 999 steps to the top of it, and the place is gigantic.. from there you have a 360 degree view of the valley on one side and the ocean on the other..

- sounio: i don't know if there's anything else there.. beaches, i suppose.. but the reason people go there is to see the temple of poseidon, which is situated right on the edge of a cliff, and the sunset there is considered one of the best in greece..

- graffiti: it's all over the place and there's some good stuff.. i think it adds personality to the city..

- the acropolis: visiting it was a bad (read on..), but you can see it from pretty much anywhere in the city (at least the parts i went to), and specially at night, when it's illuminated, it's a hell of a sight..

- couchsurfing: again, i did some couchsurfing and my host was great.. she took me to a local alternative scene, to a friend's birthday party on a rooftop with an incredible view, to some non touristy bars and restaurants and to a friends dance/acrobatics performance.. the experience was so much better than any tourist attraction!

bads:
- the acropolis: not the acropolis itself, but the fact that there was a million people there, and what i disliked the most, the cranes and building equipments all over the place (mostly the parthenon), because they're doing restaurations to make it look like it did originally... i much rather see the original thing fall to pieces.. it's just natural!

- graffiti: there's some dirty looking, ugly ones as well..

- the money: spending euros really hurts the wallet, specially after two months in asia, and immediately after egypt.. i still managed to be economic, not eating in expensive places, using my student discounts when possible, and couchsurfing..

curious:
- there are dogs all over the city.. big, fat dogs.. and most of them wear collars.. the government gets them, then vaccinate and tag them, then send them back to the streets.. they 'took care' of some before the olympic games in 2004 and the people went crazy about it, so now they have no choice..

uau, grecia!  o ultimo pais na minha aventura ao redor do mundo.. eu nao to com vontade de escrever um post normal, entao eu so' vou fazer uma lista do bom, ruim e curioso..

bom:
- as montanhas: as vistas da acropolis e philopappos (em atenas), o castelo de palamidi (em nafplio) e o templo de poseidon (sounio) sao espetaculares..

- nafplio: uma cidadezinha a sudoeste de atenas, foi a primeira capital da grecia moderna (anos 1800 dc).. o castelo de palamidi fica la, e voce tem que subir os 999 degraus pra chegar ao topo, e o lugar e' gigantesco.. de la voce tem uma vista de 360 graus do vale de um lado, e o oceano do outro..

- sounio: eu nao sei se tem mais alguma coisa la.. praias, eu acho.. mas as pessoas vao la mesmo pra ver o templo de poseidon, que fica a beira de um penhasco, e o por do sol la' e' considerado um dos mais bonitos na grecia..

- grafite: esta' por todo lado e tem muita coisa boa.. eu acho que adiciona mais personalidade pra cidade..

- a acropolis: a visita foi ruim (continue lendo..), mas voce pode ve-la de praticamente qualquer lugar na cidade (pelo menos as partes que eu fui), e especialmente de noite, quando esta' iluminada, a vista e' fantastica..

- couchsurfing: mais uma vez, eu fiz couchsurfing e a minha host foi otima.. ela me levou 'a cena alternativa local, 'a festa de aniversario de uma amiga num terraco, com uma vista linda, a alguns bares e restaurantes na area nao turistica da cidade e a uma performance de danca/acrobacias de um amigo.. a experiencia foi muito melhor que qualquer atracao turistica!

ruim:
- a acropolis: nao a acropolis de verdade, mas o fato de que tinha um milhao de pessoas la, e o que mais me decepcionou, guindastes e equipamentos de construcao por todo lado (principalmente no parthenon), porque eles estao restaurando os templos pra eles parecerem o maximo com os originais.. eu prefiro ver a estrutura original caindo aos pedacos.. e' simplesmente natural!

- grafite: nao sei o que o dunga tava pensando! (HA! piadela..).. mas de verdade, tem muita grafite feia na cidade, o que da um visual sujo as vezes..

- o dinheiro: gastar em euros realmente doi no bolso, principalmente depois de 2 meses na asia e imediatamente depois do egito.. eu ainda consegui ser economico, nao comendo em lugares caros, usando meu desconto de estudante sempre que possivel e fazendo couchsurfing..

curioso:
- tem cachorro pela cidade toda.. grandes e gordos.. e a maioria deles tem coleira.. o governo pega, vacina, bota coleira e os devolve pra rua.. eles estavam "resolvendo o problema" perto das olimpiadas de 2004, mas a populacao se revoltou, entao agora eles nao tem escolha..

egypt

egypt: pyramids, desert, sphinx, history, ruins, tombs, sarcophaguses (or sarcophagi, your choice), pharaohs.. everybody knows that part.. but is there anything more? really, as far as general tourism, i don't think so..

at first, i hated egypt. it is hot, dirty, noisy, ugly, dusty, hectic, dry and polluted.. thinking maybe only cairo was like this, after a couple of days (and after seeing the pyramids and the museum) i decided to go to alexandria..

alexandria is by the beach, and i thought it'd more laid back, where i could get away from the chaos and relax, but i was wrong.. it was just as bad, but with worse accommodations and even less interesting stuff to see..

and then my luck changed: i met an amazing local girl through couchsurfing, and instead of sightseeing and doing touristy things, i made a friend.. we hung out for 3 days, talking hours over tea, stuffing our bellies with amazing egyptian food, playing guitar at the park or just walking around aimlessly..

it was some fantastic 3 days, but i had to go back to cairo and see more stuff.. so i did, and then i met more couchsurfers and some of their friends.. we were 6, all from different countries, different backgrounds and different reasons for being in cairo.. one of them never did much sightseeing, so we decided to go on a 'tourist day'..

we actually didn't see much, because it was pretty hot and we met kinda late, but we managed to go to the citadel, in islamic cairo, with some mosques (including the mohamed ali mosque) and an old palace.. then we waited for a dramatic sunset over a panoramic view of the city at the al-azhar park..

other than the good people, one thing i absolutely loved about egypt is the food.. shawerma (meat sandwich), fetir (sort of a pancake), gibna beida, baba ganouj, foul eskandrani, humus, mosaka (dips).. jeez, my mouth is watering already!

so there you go.. started with bad impressions, left wanting more.. five thousand years of history, and still surprising, this is egypt.

egito: piramides, deserto, esfinge, historia, ruinas, tumbas, sarcofagos, faraos.. todo mundo sabe dessa parte.. mas tem mais alguma coisa? de verdade, em geral, turisticamente, eu acho que nao..

a principio eu odiei o egito. e' quente, sujo, barulhento, feio, empoeirado, caotico, seco e poluido.. pensando que talvez isso fosse so' em cairo, depois de uns 2 dias (e depois de ver as piramides e o museu) eu decidi ir a alexandria..

alexandria e' uma cidade praiana, e eu achei que seria mais sossegada, onde eu poderia me livrar do caos e relaxar, mas eu estava errado.. era tao ruim quanto, mas com piores acomodacoes e ainda menos coisas interessantes pra ver..

e ai' minha sorte virou: eu conheci uma fantastica garota local atraves do couchsurfing, e ao ives de ver a cidade e fazer passeios turisticos, eu fiz uma amizade.. a gente passou 3 dias juntos, conversando por horas e tomando cha, enchendo a banha com a maravilhosa comida egipcia, tocando violao no parque e simplesmente andando sem rumo pela cidade..

foram 3 dias fantasticos, mas eu tinha que voltar a cairo pra ver mais coisas.. entao eu voltei, e conheci mais gente do couchsurfing e amigos deles tambem.. eramos 6, todos de paises diferentes, e todos em cairo por razoes diferentes.. um deles nao tinha visto muito a parte turistica da cidade ainda, entao a gente combinou de tirar um "dia de turista"..

nos nao vimos muito, porque o dia estava extremamente quente e a gente se encontrou meio tarde, mas tivemos tempo de ir ao citadel, no cairo islamico, com alguns mosques (incluindo o importante mohamed ali mosque) e um palacio antigo.. depois ficamos esperando pelo por do sol dramatico sobre uma vista panoramica da cidade, no parque al-azhar..

alem das pessoas, outra coisa que eu absolutamente adorei no egito foi a comida.. shawerma (sanduiche de carne), fetir (tipo uma panqueca), gibna beida, baba ganouj, foul eskandrani, humus, mosaka (tipo pates).. humm, ja ta dando agua na boca!

entao ta ai'.. comecei com uma ma impressao, terminei querendo mais.. cinco mil anos de historia, e ainda surpreendente, esse e' o egito.

south africa

when i planned south africa as part of my itinerary, it was  because: 1. i wanted to visit the 'real' africa (i don't really see egypt as africa), and 2. i wanted to do a safari, see animals in the wild and such. it didn't even cross my mind at the time that they were hosting the 2010 world cup..

and there i was, only around a month and a half before the world cup, seeing the city still under construction.. like the taxi driver said: "before, all people would talk about was animals.. now, it's all football!".. and i'll tell you it's good to be a brazilian when all they talk about is football!

it was a long journey (35 hours door to door, bali to durban).. i flew into jo'burg, but went straight to the bus station to durban.. jo'burg is known for being one of the most dangerous cities in the world, and durban is known for being one of the friendliest cities in south africa (and it's by the beach).. the choice was clear to me..

so there i visited the spankin' new moses mabhida stadium, where amongst other games, brazil is going to play against portugal.. it was some experience, going inside with it empty, walking on the grass, and then going up the 550 steps to the top of the 106m arc that holds up the roof, and having a 360 degree view of the city and the ocean..

still craving for some local culture, i visited the isithumba village, in the valley of a thousand hills, outside of durban.. there was a zulu wedding happening the whole weekend (it was a sunday), so i went with a local and saw some of the traditions, like all the singing and the zulu dance (videos to come)..

and then it was time to the much expected hluhluwe-umfolozi tour: two days seeing (or trying to see) animals in the wild.. it started with a ferry ride up the santa lucia river, where we spotted lots of hippos, a couple of crocs and some interesting birds, like the beautiful african fish eagle..

from there, a quick visit to the cheetah rehabilitation center, where they take care of the cats and, when possible, return them to the wild.. it was feeding time, and i saw wild african cats, servals (and went inside the cage with them!), lynxes (jumping up to 3m to grab their food) and cheetahs (not amazed by our presence)..

next day, the real thing: game viewing (safari) in the national reserve.. the park is known for the good chance of spotting the big five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), and the large number of rhinos and elephants.. well, i was only half expecting to be lucky enough to see the big cats.. and i didn't.. but no elephants? that was a bummer!

but it still was good, as i spotted giraffes, rhinos, buffaloes, wildebeests (gnus), zebras, warthogs (pumbas), impalas, monkeys and a very venomous looking snake.. sometimes you could barely see the animals, but other times they were right there, up close, and that was the awesome part, especially when we were in a hide, where they had no idea they were being watched.. killer! (no pun..)

quando eu coloquei a africa do sul no meu itinerario, foi porque: 1. eu queria visitar a africa "de verdade" (eu nao considero muito o egito como parte da africa), e 2. eu queria fazer um safari, ver animais no habitat natural deles. nem me passou pela cabeca que eles estariam sediando a copa do mundo de 2010..

e la estava eu, apenas a um mes e meio do inicio da copa, vendo a cidade ainda em obras.. como o taxista me disse: "antes, todo mundo que vinha pra ca' so' falava de animais.. agora, e' so' futebol!".. e eu ja te digo, e' bom ser brasileiro quando o assunto em todo lugar e' futebol!

foi uma longa jornada (35 horas de porta a porta, bali ate' durban).. eu voei pra joanesburgo (jo'burg), mas fui direto pra rodoviaria, pra pegar um onibus pra durban.. jo'burg e' considerada uma das cidades mais violentas do mundo, e durban e' considerada uma das cidades mais amistosas da africa (e fica na praia).. a escolha era clara pra mim..

entao fui visitar o estadio moses mabhida, novo em folha, onde entre outros jogos, o brasil vai enfrentar portugal.. foi uma experiencia, entrar no estadio vazio, pisar no gramado, e depois subir os 550 degraus ate' o topo do arco que suporta a cobertura (106 metros), de onde eu tive uma vista de 360 graus da cidade e do oceano..

ainda querendo ver mais da cultura local, visitei o vilarejo de isithumba, no vale dos mil montes (valley of a thousand hills), perto de durban.. durante todo o fim de semana, estava acontecendo um casamento zulu, entao eu fui com um local e vi algumas tradicoes, como as musicas e as dancas zulu (videos em breve)..

e entao chegou a tao esperada hluhluwe-umfolozi tour: dois dias vendo (ou tentando ver) animais na selva.. comecou com uma volta de barco pelo rio santa lucia, onde pude ver varios hipopotamos, alguns crocodilos e uns passaros interessantes, como a bela aguia pescadora africana (traducao?)..

de la, uma rapida visita ao centro de rehabilitacao para cheetahs, onde eles cuidam dos gatos e, quando possivel, os liberam de volta ao habitat natural.. era a hora da alimentacao, e eu vi gatos selvagens africanos, servals (e fui dentro da jaula com eles!), linces (pulando ate' 3 metros pra agarrar a comida deles) e cheetahs (que nao estavam muito felizes com a nossa presenca)..

no dia seguinte, a coisa seria: o safari na reserva nacional.. o parque e' conhecido pela boa chance de encontrar os '5 grandes' (big 5: leao, leopardo, elefante, rinoceronte e buffalo), e pelo grande numero de rinocerontes e elefantes.. bom, eu nao esperava muito ver os gatos.. e nao vi mesmo.. mas nem elefantes? isso foi frustrante!

mas ainda foi bom, porque eu vi girafas, rinocerontes, bufalos, gnus, javalis africanos (pumbas), impalas, macacos e uma cobra que parecia ser bem venenosa.. as vezes mal dava pra ver os animais, mas outras, eles estavam bem ali, pertinho.. e essa foi a melhor parte, principalmente quando a gente estava nos 'esconderijos', onde eles nao tinham ideia que estavam sendo observados...

if you think cheap accommodation, food and drinks, great people, amazing nightlife, lots of bargain shopping, stunning landscape, miles of beaches and exotic culture sounds like heaven, then you'd love bali, the island of gods..

even though half of my days there were spoiled by torrential thunderstorms, i feel that bali was the perfect place to end the southeast asian leg of my trip.. just like some of my favorite places so far (fiji, vietnam, laos..), the vibe there was the high point...

i stayed mostly in kuta, the backpackers central, a few minutes from the (crowded) beach, shops everywhere, busy and beautiful nightlife.. also, a couple of days in seminyak, with more families, resorts and spas.. and more expensive, of course..

when the rain stopped (on the 5th day), i went and explored the bukit peninsula, on the south, with beautiful beaches (nusa dua, padang padang) and the uluwau temple (the sunset temple)..

the day before i left, i realized i had had a great time so far, but didn't see much.. so i went a little closer to the central area of the island, visiting the pura puseh temple, the famous rice fields (under rain), and got some money shots at the holy monkey forest..

i also did some couchsurfing in bali.. i was in hotels for the first two nights in kuta, but in seminyak, a russian that has been there for a year hosted me, and back to kuta, i stayed with a local (from java) until i left, and met other couchsurfers through her..

so i did enough r&r (like reading a whole book in 3 days, when it was raining), had a good couchsurfing experience, met a few really nice people, did some sightseeing, partied and partied more... was that a great goodbye to asia or what?

se voce acha que acomodacao, comida e bebidas baratas, boa gente, otima vida noturna, muitas barganhas, paisagens lindas, kilometros de praias e uma cultura exotica parece o paraiso, entao voce vai adorar bali, a ilha dos deuses..

mesmo passando metade dos meus dias la sob chuvas torrenciais, eu sinto que bali foi o lugar perfeito pra encerrar a parte sudeste-asiatica da minha viagem.. assim como alguns dos meus lugares favoritos ate' agora (fiji, vietnam, laos..), a energia positiva de la' foi a melhor parte..

eu fiquei a maior parte do tempo em kuta, a central dos mochileiros, a alguns minutos da praia (lotada), compras por todo lado, vida noturna agitada... tambem passei uns dias em seminyak, onde tem mais familias, resorts e spas.. e e' mais caro, obviamente..

quando a chuva parou (no quinto dia), eu fui explorar a peninsula de bukit, no sul, com lindas praias (nusa dua, padang padang) e o templo de uluwatu (o templo do por-do-sol)..

um dia antes de ir embora, eu percebi que passei bons tempos por la', mas que nao tinha visto muita coisa... entao eu fui mais pra perto da area central da ilha, visitando o templo de pura puseh, as famosas plantacoes de arroz (sob chuva), e tirei umas boas fotos na floresta sagrada dos macacos (ou floresta dos macacos sagrados?)..

eu tambem fiz couchsurfing em bali.. estive em hoteis pelas primeiras duas noites em kuta, mas em seminyak, eu fiquei na casa de uma russa, que mora la' ha' um ano, e de volta a kuta, fiquei com uma local (de java) ate' ir embora, e conheci outros membros do couchsurfing atraves dela..

entao eu relaxei o suficiente (por exemplo, li um livro todo em 3 dias, quando estava chovendo), tive uma boa experiencia com o couchsurfing, conheci algumas pessoas bem legais, vi pontos turisticos, fiz festa e mais festa... foi ou nao foi um encerramento com chave de ouro?
