greece

whoa, greece! the last country on my rtw adventure.. i don't really feel like writing a normal post, so i'm just gonna do a list of goods, bads and curious..

goods:
- the hills: the views from the acropolis and philopappos (in athens), the palamidi castle (in nafplio) and the temple of poseidon (sounio) are nothing short of amazing..

- nafplio: small town southwest of athens, it was the first capital of modern greece (1800's ad).. the palamidi castle is there, and you go up 999 steps to the top of it, and the place is gigantic.. from there you have a 360 degree view of the valley on one side and the ocean on the other..

- sounio: i don't know if there's anything else there.. beaches, i suppose.. but the reason people go there is to see the temple of poseidon, which is situated right on the edge of a cliff, and the sunset there is considered one of the best in greece..

- graffiti: it's all over the place and there's some good stuff.. i think it adds personality to the city..

- the acropolis: visiting it was a bad (read on..), but you can see it from pretty much anywhere in the city (at least the parts i went to), and specially at night, when it's illuminated, it's a hell of a sight..

- couchsurfing: again, i did some couchsurfing and my host was great.. she took me to a local alternative scene, to a friend's birthday party on a rooftop with an incredible view, to some non touristy bars and restaurants and to a friends dance/acrobatics performance.. the experience was so much better than any tourist attraction!

bads:
- the acropolis: not the acropolis itself, but the fact that there was a million people there, and what i disliked the most, the cranes and building equipments all over the place (mostly the parthenon), because they're doing restaurations to make it look like it did originally... i much rather see the original thing fall to pieces.. it's just natural!

- graffiti: there's some dirty looking, ugly ones as well..

- the money: spending euros really hurts the wallet, specially after two months in asia, and immediately after egypt.. i still managed to be economic, not eating in expensive places, using my student discounts when possible, and couchsurfing..

curious:
- there are dogs all over the city.. big, fat dogs.. and most of them wear collars.. the government gets them, then vaccinate and tag them, then send them back to the streets.. they 'took care' of some before the olympic games in 2004 and the people went crazy about it, so now they have no choice..

uau, grecia!  o ultimo pais na minha aventura ao redor do mundo.. eu nao to com vontade de escrever um post normal, entao eu so' vou fazer uma lista do bom, ruim e curioso..

bom:
- as montanhas: as vistas da acropolis e philopappos (em atenas), o castelo de palamidi (em nafplio) e o templo de poseidon (sounio) sao espetaculares..

- nafplio: uma cidadezinha a sudoeste de atenas, foi a primeira capital da grecia moderna (anos 1800 dc).. o castelo de palamidi fica la, e voce tem que subir os 999 degraus pra chegar ao topo, e o lugar e' gigantesco.. de la voce tem uma vista de 360 graus do vale de um lado, e o oceano do outro..

- sounio: eu nao sei se tem mais alguma coisa la.. praias, eu acho.. mas as pessoas vao la mesmo pra ver o templo de poseidon, que fica a beira de um penhasco, e o por do sol la' e' considerado um dos mais bonitos na grecia..

- grafite: esta' por todo lado e tem muita coisa boa.. eu acho que adiciona mais personalidade pra cidade..

- a acropolis: a visita foi ruim (continue lendo..), mas voce pode ve-la de praticamente qualquer lugar na cidade (pelo menos as partes que eu fui), e especialmente de noite, quando esta' iluminada, a vista e' fantastica..

- couchsurfing: mais uma vez, eu fiz couchsurfing e a minha host foi otima.. ela me levou 'a cena alternativa local, 'a festa de aniversario de uma amiga num terraco, com uma vista linda, a alguns bares e restaurantes na area nao turistica da cidade e a uma performance de danca/acrobacias de um amigo.. a experiencia foi muito melhor que qualquer atracao turistica!

ruim:
- a acropolis: nao a acropolis de verdade, mas o fato de que tinha um milhao de pessoas la, e o que mais me decepcionou, guindastes e equipamentos de construcao por todo lado (principalmente no parthenon), porque eles estao restaurando os templos pra eles parecerem o maximo com os originais.. eu prefiro ver a estrutura original caindo aos pedacos.. e' simplesmente natural!

- grafite: nao sei o que o dunga tava pensando! (HA! piadela..).. mas de verdade, tem muita grafite feia na cidade, o que da um visual sujo as vezes..

- o dinheiro: gastar em euros realmente doi no bolso, principalmente depois de 2 meses na asia e imediatamente depois do egito.. eu ainda consegui ser economico, nao comendo em lugares caros, usando meu desconto de estudante sempre que possivel e fazendo couchsurfing..

curioso:
- tem cachorro pela cidade toda.. grandes e gordos.. e a maioria deles tem coleira.. o governo pega, vacina, bota coleira e os devolve pra rua.. eles estavam "resolvendo o problema" perto das olimpiadas de 2004, mas a populacao se revoltou, entao agora eles nao tem escolha..

thailand

thailand is the most talked about country in south east asia, both by backpackers and "normal" travelers. don't get me wrong, i had a great time there, but i honestly think it's a little bit overrated..

i didn't really have a great start.. i crossed the border from malaysia to sungai kolok by foot, and after walking for almost two hours trying to find the bus station (nobody spoke english and i never got the same directions twice), i finally found it..

but it was too late, the bus i wanted to take had left some 15 minutes before, so my only option would be stay there for the night and take the morning bus, setting me back a couple of days on my schedule..

no problem, two days later i was in beautiful koh tao, the "diving course capital of the universe", and i started my classes the same day.. the course was great, just 3 people in my group, cool instructor, beautiful dive places.. and now i'm a certificated open water diver!

from there, i headed to bangkok, the most overrated place of all.. i guess westerns do get overwhelmed getting there, seeing all the poverty, dirty streets, street vendors (very aggressive ones), prostitutes, lady boys, chaotic traffic, crowded streets, all the smells and colors..

i went for a walk, saw some temples, the markets, and the world famous khao san road (where i stayed).. again: yes it's different, it's interesting, but an amazing place? i don't think so.. i had fun, partied a little in khao san road, but left the next day..

couple of hours north of bangkok is ayutthaya. some 300 years ago, it was one of the world's largest and most prosperous cities, but it was destroyed, and now it's a place with interesting ruins, impressive huge buddhas, small headless buddhas and thousands of sick dogs on the streets..

further up north, there's chiang mai, the second largest city in thailand (and it's still tiny!).. and there they have.. well, more of the same: temples, buddhas, ruins, street markets, prostitutes and elephants..

the elephant thing actually bothered me.. they're a huge part of the thai culture.. you can go for rides, or volunteer to take care of them in sanctuaries.. but there's a lot of animal cruelty going on to train them.. luckily i didn't really see much of that..

one night in chiang mai, there was a thai guy with a young elephant, going from bar to bar, making him stick his head in, "talk" and dance.. i bet he loved the loud music, the smoke and all the people touching him, flashing cameras at his face and such.. idiot.

from chiang mai, i took a van to chiang khong, border with laos.. met some people in the van and ended up traveling with some of them in laos as well..

so again, thailand was good, but i was also glad to leave.. maybe i'll go back sometime, maybe with a friend, and enjoy more the party side of the country.. but as far as the cultural side, i just got bored of temples, street markets and people trying too hard to sell you something..

tailandia e' o pais mais comentado no sudeste da asia, tanto por mochileiros, quanto por viajantes "normais". nao me leve a mal, eu tive otimos momentos por la', mas eu acho que o povo exagera um pouco..

o comeco nao foi muito bom.. eu cruzei a fronteira da malasia pra sungai kolok a pe', e depois de andar por quase 2 horas tentando achar a estacao de onibus (ninguem falava ingles, e nunca me deram as mesmas direcoes duas vezes), eu finalmente cheguei la'..

mas ja era tarde demais, o onibus que eu ia pegar tinha saido 15 minutos antes, entao minha unica opcao era passar a noite la e pegar o onibus na manha seguinte, o que acabou me atrasando uns 2 dias..

sem problema, dois dias depois eu estava em koh tao, uma bela ilha, que e' a "capital universal dos cursos de mergulho", e eu comecei as aulas no mesmo dia.. o curso foi otimo, so' 3 pessoas no grupo, um instrutor legal, otimos lugares pra mergulhar.. e agora eu sou oficialmente certificado pra mergulhar!

de la, fui pra bangkok, o lugar mais falado da tailandia.. eu acho que os turistas ocidentais se impressionam quando chegam la e veem toda a pobreza, ruas imundas, vendedores de rua (bem agressivos), prostitutas, lady boys (travecos, mas e' dificil diferenciar de uma mulher), transito caotico, ruas lotadas, todos os cheiros e cores..

fui dar uma volta, vi alguns templos, os mercados de rua, e a khao san road (famosa rua, onde eu me hospedei).. e repito: sim, e' diferente, e' interessante, mas um lugar maravilhoso? acho que nao.. eu me diverti, fui pra night um pouco em khao san road, mas fui embora no dia seguinte..

umas 2 horas norte de bangkok fica ayutthaya. uns 300 anos atras, era uma das maiores e mais prosperas cidades do mundo, mas foi invadida e destruida, e hoje e' um lugar com ruinas interessantes, grandes buddhas, pequenos buddhas sem cabeca e milhares de cachorros doentes pelas ruas..

mais pro norte, fica chiang mai, a segunda maior cidade da tailandia (e ainda e' bem pequena).. e la eles tem.. bom, mais do mesmo: templos, buddhas, ruinas, mercados de rua, prostitutas e elefantes..

a parada dos elefantes me incomodou.. eles sao grande parte da cultura tailandesa.. voce pode ir dar uma volta de elefante, ou se voluntariar a cuidar deles em santuarios.. mas tem muita crueldade animal rolando, principalmente no treinamento deles.. por sorte, eu nao vi muito dessa parte..

uma noite em chiang mai, um tailandes estava com um elefante joven, indo de bar em bar, fazendo ele enfiar a cabeca dentro dos bares, "falar" e dancar.. imagina o quanto o elefante estava curtindo a musica alta, a fumaca de cigarros, as pessoas pegando nele, tirando fotos com flash na cada dele.. idiota.

de chiang mai, eu peguei uma van pra chiang khong, fronteira com o laos.. la eu encontrei algumas pessoas, e acabei viajando com algumas delas por laos..

entao mais uma vez, tailandia foi bom, mas eu tambem estava feliz por ir embora.. talvez eu volte algum dia, talvez com um amigo, e va curtir as famosas festas de la'.. mas na parte de cultura, eu simplesmente cansei de templos, mercados de rua e pessoas tentando te convencer a comprar alguma coisa todo o tempo..
